Our Technical Advisory practice are looking for an experienced Manager to join the team.
Our Energy and Resources team works across the energy value chain and supports many of the world's leading energy companies, infrastructure investors, private-equity funds, lenders, developers and government organisations. You will have the opportunity to work on transactions and projects across the UK, Europe and internationally. Our Market and Transactions unit is looking for an experienced Manager to join our Technical Advisory capability, working at the heart of the energy transition and supporting investors, developers, lenders, utilities and public-sector organisations on complex energy infrastructure decisions. Our Technical Advisory team combines engineering, transaction advisory and technical due diligence experience to help clients understand the technical risks, opportunities, capital and operating costs, performance and value of energy assets in the thermal generation sector. You will work closely with Baringa's market, commercial, market access and transaction advice teams, while bringing an independent and engineering-led perspective to investment and development decisions.
What you will be doing
The core of the role is leading the technical workstreams of buy-side, sell-side and lender technical due diligence, and technical advice, across gas-fired generation, CHP, bio-to-X, heat and gas network assets. You will typically:
-
- Lead technical due diligence and technical advisory assignments supporting M&A, project finance, refinancing and infrastructure investment, managing multidisciplinary teams, coordinating specialist inputs and coaching junior colleagues.
- Assess the technical feasibility, performance, condition, risks and opportunities associated with operating assets and development projects, undertaking or overseeing feasibility studies, technical option assessments and techno-economic analysis.
- Review engineering designs, technical specifications, EPC and O&M contracts, asset-management strategies, permits, warranties and other key project documentation.
- Assess CAPEX, OPEX, development and lifecycle costs, maintenance strategies, availability and performance assumptions underpinning investment cases.
- Review technology maturity, technology-provider capability, performance guarantees and project delivery strategies.
- Identify material technical risks and opportunities, translating engineering findings into clear implications for valuation, investment decisions, financing and business plans.
- Present technical findings, recommendations and risk assessments clearly to investment committees, lenders, developers and senior client stakeholders.
- Develop trusted relationships with infrastructure funds, private-equity investors, lenders, developers and energy companies.
- Support the development of Baringa's Technical Advisory capability, including methodologies, quality assurance, knowledge development and coaching of junior team members.
- Turn complex and often incomplete technical information into clear findings and recommendations through reports, risk registers and presentations to investment committees, lenders and senior client stakeholders, and take part in Q&A sessions, management meetings and site visits.
Your skills and experience
- You will typically have 7 to 9 years of relevant professional experience, although we welcome candidates outside this range with particularly relevant experience.
- You will have a strong foundation in mechanical, chemical or process, energy or environmental engineering, supported by a relevant degree, equivalent qualification or substantial practical experience.
- You will have a proven record of leading technical due diligence, Lender's Technical Advisor assignments or comparable investor-facing technical assessments. This includes assessing capital and operating expenditure, identifying material technical and investment risks, and owning key deliverables such as TDD reports and red flag presentations. This experience must go beyond engineering design review, market modelling or general management consulting.
- You will have in-depth, hands-on experience of one or more of: CCGT and OCGT; reciprocating gas engines and flexible gas peakers; CHP and cogeneration; bio-to-X and low-carbon fuels; heat networks; or gas transmission and distribution networks. This includes performance, condition and lifecycle cost assessment.
- You will have experience managing assignments and multidisciplinary teams, and acting as a trusted point of contact for senior client stakeholders.
- You will be able to explain how engineering findings affect cost, risk, deliverability and value, clearly and concisely, to senior decision-makers.
