Director of Engineering

Our FinTech client is seeking an experienced Cloud Director of Engineering to lead a growing technology organisation through an exciting period of transformation and expansion. This is a strategic leadership role focused on leading leaders, driving large-scale programmes, influencing technology direction, and partnering closely with senior business stakeholders. The successful candidate will oversee multiple engineering teams and managers, helping shape the future of the organisation's technology landscape while ensuring engineering execution remains aligned with business goals and growth plans across Europe. This is a fully remote position, with occasional travel (approximately once per month) for leadership workshops, planning sessions, and stakeholder meetings. Key Responsibilities Engineering Leadership - Lead, mentor, and develop Engineering Managers and senior technology leaders across multiple teams. - Build a high-performing engineering culture focused on collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. - Strengthen leadership capability and establish clear succession planning across the technology function. - Provide strategic direction while empowering teams to make effective decisions and deliver results. - Partner with executive leadership to define and execute the long-term technology vision. - Lead a multi-year transformation of the organisation's payments and customer platforms. - Oversee the evolution of both legacy systems and cloud-native platforms to create a scalable, resilient technology ecosystem. - Drive initiatives focused on scalability, automation, compliance, operational excellence, and faster delivery of new products and services. - Oversee multiple strategic programmes and cross-functional initiatives simultaneously. - Ensure effective planning, governance, prioritisation, and execution across engineering teams. - Manage risks, dependencies, and stakeholder expectations across complex technology landscapes. - Drive delivery excellence while balancing innovation, quality, and business objectives. - Act as a trusted technology partner to senior business stakeholders and executive leadership. - Translate business strategy into clear technology roadmaps and execution plans. - Influence decision-making at both strategic and operational levels. - Communicate complex technical and delivery topics effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. - Support the continued growth and scaling of the engineering organisation. - Design and implement delivery structures, operating models, and team configurations that can support future expansion. - Lead hiring and talent development initiatives across engineering leadership and delivery teams. - Drive improvements in engineering productivity, quality, engagement, and retention. Required Experience - Proven experience in a Director of Engineering, Head of Engineering, Engineering Director, VP Engineering, or similar senior leadership role. - Demonstrated success leading engineering leaders and managing multiple software engineering teams. - Experience delivering large-scale business and technology transformation programmes. - Strong background operating within complex environments that include both legacy and modern cloud-native platforms. - Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience partnering with C-level and senior business leaders. - Experience scaling engineering organisations and supporting periods of significant business growth. - Strong understanding of software delivery, organisational design, engineering governance, and technology strategy. Preferred Experience - Exposure to platform modernisation, digital transformation, and European market expansion. - Knowledge of modern cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. - Understanding of compliance, security, risk management, and highly regulated technology environments.
