Description
About the role:
Flogas Ireland is seeking a Data Engineering Lead to own the technical strategy and delivery of our combined data and analytics engineering discipline. Leading a team of Data Engineers this role sets the architecture, standards, and roadmap spanning data ingestion through to data modelling on our Microsoft Fabric platform, ensuring the pipelines, infrastructure, and semantic layer underpinning reporting and data science are reliable, scalable, well-modelled, and built for the long term.
- Set the technical strategy and architecture for the combined data and analytics engineering platform - from ingestion pipelines through to the semantic and transformation layers, defining standards for pipeline design, the Medallion Architecture and data modelling across Microsoft Fabric.
- Line-manage and develop the data engineering team, providing technical direction, coaching, and career development for Data Engineers.
- Own the platform's reliability, scalability, and cost profile end-to-end, and the roadmap for data modelling and the Medallion Architecture (bronze, silver, gold layers), prioritising investment against business demand and risk.
- Own data modelling and pipeline documentation standards in the data catalogue, reducing key-person dependency and enabling self-service analytics across the business.
- Partner with the BI & Reporting and Data Governance to ensure a seamless, well-governed pipeline from raw data through to certified reporting and analytics datasets.
- Represent data and analytics engineering in planning and prioritisation discussions with the Head of Data, translating business priorities into a realistic delivery roadmap.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and technical assessment for the combined team as and when it grows.
- Champion engineering best practice - code review, testing, CI/CD, version control, and documentation - raising the bar across the wider Data & Analytics function.
Essential:
- Proven track record as a senior or lead Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or similar, with a particular hands-on expertise in data modelling
- Strong SQL and Python skills, with strong experience of a modern cloud data platform (e.g. Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Databricks, Snowflake)
- Deep understanding of Medallion/lakehouse architecture, dimensional modelling, and dbt or an equivalent transformation framework
- Experience setting technical architecture and standards across both pipeline engineering and data modelling
- Experience line-managing or leading a technical team, including coaching and performance development
- Strong stakeholder management skills, able to translate business priorities into a credible technical roadmap
- Sound judgement balancing delivery pace, technical debt, and platform risk
Desirable:
- Experience in an energy, utilities, or regulated industry
- Deep familiarity with Microsoft Fabric at platform-owner level
- Experience building or scaling a combined engineering function from a small team
- Exposure to data governance and cataloguing tools (e.g. Microsoft Purview)
- Experience establishing data testing and CI/CD practices across pipelines and analytics code
- Semantic link labs library familiarity/experience
