A fully hands-on Staff Engineer role for someone who loves building software and wants serious technical influence without moving into management. You'd be joining a VC-backed legal tech SaaS scale-up that's raised £25M, with hundreds established global customers on long-term contracts and £1bn already processed through its platform. They're around 60 people, with 15 engineers, building software that automates legal onboarding, compliance, payments and complex workflows. They're increasingly using agentic AI to interpret data, automate manual processes and help businesses make smarter decisions. They've invested heavily in AI, using OpenAI and Anthropic models, with no token limits or unnecessary red tape slowing down engineering. What makes this role interesting? - You'll be one of the most senior engineers, with significant ownership of the platform, architecture, technical decisions and building and shipping products. - You'll join an engineering team that absolutely loves geeking out over solving challenging technical problems. You'll be surrounded by talented engineers who challenge each other's thinking, share ideas and help each other improve. - It's somewhere you'll become an even better engineer, not just move somewhere to be the smartest person in the room. - You'll have access to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the latest AI tooling, with the freedom to experiment, move quickly and ship software. - You'll be working on an established, revenue-generating SaaS product rather than another AI idea that's just been spun up yesterday. What are they looking for? Someone who fully embraces AI-assisted development but has the battle scars to understand the importance of good architecture, maintainable code and strong engineering fundamentals. Their stack is Python, JavaScript and AWS, but technical depth matters far more than frameworks. You don't need to have held a Staff Engineer title before. Location and flexibility The engineering team is spread across the UK, with a London office available whenever you like. The team typically gets together weekly.
