AI Software Engineer
Salary: £60,000 – £86,300 per annum, depending on experience (+ 10% bonus)
Location: Oxford, UK
Working pattern: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the Oxford office
We’re looking for an experienced AI Software Engineer to join a growing software development team and play a key role in building innovative, intelligent products and internal solutions.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced AI engineer who enjoys taking ideas from concept through to production. You’ll design and develop robust AI-powered services using Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and multi-agent orchestration, helping to deliver practical AI capabilities that create genuine value for users.
As a senior member of the team, you’ll have the opportunity to influence technical direction, make architectural decisions, mentor other engineers and champion best practices in AI-assisted software development.
The Role
You’ll take end-to-end ownership of AI features, working closely with software engineers, product managers and stakeholders to turn ideas into scalable, reliable solutions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing and developing AI solutions from concept through to deployment.
- Building and maintaining RAG pipelines and agentic AI systems for complex, multi-step tasks.
- Developing robust evaluation approaches to measure and improve AI solution quality.
- Identifying and evaluating new data sources and designing scalable data pipelines.
- Deploying and scaling AI solutions using AWS cloud infrastructure, including serverless technologies such as AWS Lambda.
- Monitoring AI solutions in production and continuously improving their performance and accuracy.
- Working collaboratively with the wider software engineering team and stakeholders to develop effective AI-powered products.
- Providing technical leadership and contributing to architectural decisions.
- Mentoring and coaching junior and mid-level engineers.
- Championing innovation, continuous learning and operational excellence across the engineering team.
- Promoting effective use of AI-assisted engineering tools and practices.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone with strong hands-on AI engineering experience and a track record of building and operating complex software solutions.
Essential experience
- 5+ years’ experience building complex software solutions, with a strong focus on AI and machine learning.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Experience with machine learning frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Hands-on experience with modern AI/LLM tooling, including frameworks such as LangGraph.
- Proven experience deploying and operating AI solutions in the cloud, ideally AWS.
- Experience with cloud services such as AWS Lambda, EC2 or ECS, as well as data storage technologies including S3 and databases.
- Experience with CI/CD, Docker/containerisation and infrastructure automation, using technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation or similar.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to tackle ambiguous technical challenges and develop effective solutions.
- Experience leading technical projects and, where appropriate, small engineering teams.
- Experience mentoring engineers or data scientists through guidance, code reviews and best-practice development.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Desirable experience
- A Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning or a related discipline.
- Experience working with time-series data, simulation models, financial or market data.
- Experience with front-end or full-stack software development.
- Experience within the energy sector or another data-intensive industry.
What’s on Offer
Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll have access to a range of benefits, including:
- Private medical insurance
- Dental insurance
- Parental support
- Salary-exchange pension
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Local Oxford discounts
- Cycle-to-work scheme
- Flu vaccinations
- Hybrid working, with 3 days per week based in the Oxford office
Why Join?
This is an opportunity to join a growing, highly technical environment where AI is central to the development of innovative products and solutions.
You’ll have the autonomy to influence how AI is designed, deployed and used, while working alongside experienced engineers and stakeholders across the business. The role offers genuine scope to make a significant technical impact while developing your leadership and AI engineering expertise.
If you’re an experienced AI engineer looking for your next challenge and want to work on sophisticated, production-grade AI systems, we’d love to hear from you.
