Senior Staff Software Engineer

Staff Software Engineer Location: London | Hybrid The role Our client is a large, established organisation that is scaling up its data engineering function. It needs a senior engineer to own the technical direction of a shared data platform used by several delivery teams. This is roughly 60% hands-on engineering and 40% leadership. You’ll make the architecture calls, build the foundations others rely on, and raise the standard of engineering around you. What the job involves - Owning platform architecture and the reasoning behind it - Building and improving shared tooling, data pipelines and automation - Partnering with product and engineering management on priorities and trade-offs - Supporting production services, including a share of on call - Mentoring engineers and reviewing designs and code - Working with third parties where their systems connect to ours What we need - A record of designing and running large-scale data systems in production - Deep experience with at least one major cloud provider - Strong Python and solid software engineering discipline (testing, CI/CD, code review) - Experience with containers, infrastructure as code, and modern data processing and orchestration tooling - Good judgement on data modelling and choosing the right storage for the job - Practical operational experience: monitoring, debugging, incident response - Experience handling confidential data responsibly - Clear communication with technical and non-technical colleagues You don’t need to match every point.
