Description
The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) is hiring motivated and talented individuals to help design, build, and operate the world's most powerful neutron source.
We are seeking ambitious professionals from a wide range of disciplines who are excited by the opportunity to contribute to the future of science in Europe. The ESS accelerator, target, and experimental facilities are located in the vibrant university city of Lund, Sweden, while our Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) is based in Kongens Lyngby (North of Copenhagen), Denmark.
ESS is seeking a Scientific HPC System Officer to join the Data Systems and Technology Group in Copenhagen.
About the team
The Data Systems and Technology Group is responsible for designing, deploying, operating, and continuously developing the infrastructure that supports the storage, processing, and management of the scientific data generated at ESS. The team plays a critical role in ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable computing services for one of the world's leading research facilities.
About the role
As our future Scientific HPC System Officer, you will apply advanced technical expertise to support and further develop ESS's scientific computing infrastructure. You will work independently on complex technical challenges, contribute to strategic infrastructure initiatives, and act as a trusted resource within your area of expertise.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Driving the deployment of new IT hardware and services supporting scientific computing and data-intensive research;
- Developing, maintaining, and improving automation and deployment scripts for infrastructure and services;
- Contributing to the design, implementation, and evolution of scientific computing infrastructure for a large-scale international research facility;
- Managing technical projects and infrastructure initiatives with a high degree of independence;
- Investigating, analysing, and resolving complex technical issues where standard solutions may not always exist;
- Acting as a technical point of contact within your area of expertise and providing guidance to colleagues and stakeholders;
- Monitoring, investigating, and reporting hardware, service, and infrastructure-related incidents;
- Identifying, assessing, and reporting information security risks and incidents;
- Contributing to process improvements, operational best practices, and the development of technical procedures and standards;
- Supporting knowledge sharing and providing guidance to junior scientists and engineers.
About you
The successful candidate combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative mindset and enjoys solving complex technical challenges in an international scientific environment.
To be successful in this role, you should have:
- A Master's degree or PhD in computer science, physics, engineering, or another relevant scientific or technical discipline;
- Typically 4-7 years of relevant professional experience with a Master's degree, or a PhD combined with at least 2 years of post-doctoral or equivalent professional experience;
- Advanced knowledge of HPC environments, scientific computing infrastructure, large-scale data systems, or related technical domains;
- Demonstrated experience managing technical projects, processes, or infrastructure activities with limited supervision;
- Experience solving complex technical problems requiring analytical thinking, creativity, and sound engineering judgement;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and cultures;
- Full professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
Experience in the following areas is considered a strong advantage:
- Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platforms;
- OpenStack, OpenNebula, Proxmox, or comparable virtualisation environments;
- High-availability and site-to-site failover solutions;
- Design and implementation of large-scale, high-performance storage solutions or virtualisation platforms;
- Kubernetes or other container orchestration technologies.
What ESS offers
At ESS, you will contribute to cutting-edge science while working with talented colleagues in an international and collaborative environment.
We offer:
- Challenging tasks involving open-source technologies integrated with state-of-the-art scientific computing infrastructure;
- Opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across ESS and leading research facilities around the world;
- The chance to contribute to future scientific discoveries enabled by neutron science;
- An attractive benefits package, including 25 days of annual leave plus 5 additional days, public holidays, flexible working arrangements, and a strong focus on work-life balance;
- Relocation support and allowances, where applicable.
