Budget Thuis makes essential household services simple and affordable, and that formula has fueled years of fast growth. Technology plays an ever bigger part in that story, from a new product operating model to major investments in AI. In close partnership with the CTO, the Head of Engineering sets the technical strategy that drives the next phase.
Over Budget Thuis
Gas, electricity, internet, and TV need to be available, reliable, and affordable, without complications. Budget Thuis is the only provider in the Netherlands that brings all these telecom and energy services under one roof. Its no-nonsense approach resonates: households switch to Budget Thuis for the convenience of one provider and the savings that come with it. Based in central Amsterdam, nearly 450 team members operate in an informal yet driven environment, blending a hands-on mindset with a strong focus on results. Together, they deliver exceptional service while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Commercially and operationally, Budget Thuis has built a strong position. Its TV proposition has launched, and by the end of this year its own fiber network will reach 2.4 million households. Rapid expansion and a series of acquisitions have also added complexity to the organization and its systems, opening up room to simplify and scale.
To support further expansion, the company has moved from a project-driven organization to a product operating model. Multidisciplinary teams take end-to-end ownership of processes and the customer experience, coordinated through OKRs, with product, engineering, and the business as equal voices at the table. The new structure is in place and has strong backing from the executive board and the CTO. Now the focus shifts to embedding the new way of working throughout engineering.
“We've laid the foundation for a product engineering culture, now we need a leader who can turn that into consistent execution, at scale, across every team.” - Noureddine Abdelaziz CTO
Vacature Head of Engineering
With ambitious growth goals ahead, the Head of Engineering shapes the technology roadmap and develops a high-performing engineering function that aligns closely with product goals and architectural priorities. The target way of working is clear: trunk-based development with short-lived branches, and automated testing instead of manual QA, with CI/CD and DORA metrics as the backbone. The stack runs on .NET, in a hybrid setup of on-premises infrastructure and Azure.
Leading six Engineering Managers and 92 engineers across seven domains, including a recently added data platform team, the Head of Engineering sets the bar for delivery and technical quality. The markets behind these domains differ widely: internet and TV call for a different approach than mobile or energy. Building a strong management layer to delegate to with confidence is an important part of the job. So is shaping how teams develop and the frameworks they work within, with collaboration and ownership as the norm. Reporting directly to the CTO and part of the CTO’s management team, the Head of Engineering works closely with the Head of Product, forming a leadership duo that connects product and engineering. Collaboration with peers in design, architecture, business, and operations further strengthens this integrated approach.
The timing makes this an attractive moment to join. The heavy lifting of the restructuring is done. What lies ahead is the part where engineering leadership makes the difference. That means completing the transformation, so Budget Thuis can respond faster to what customers need. It also means putting the modernization strategy for the legacy applications into practice. The rollout of AI within engineering is in this leader's hands, with plenty of room to operate. The foundation is already there: a company-wide Centre of Excellence led by the CTO and an in-house GPU server running open-source models. The key choices on automation and AI agents are being made now.
Success in this role rests on technical depth and a genuine enjoyment of people management. That combination ideally grows from a career that started in software engineering and moved step by step into leadership. It gives the credibility to challenge and coach engineers, while the Engineering Managers run day-to-day execution. Experience leading a transformation in a larger organization is essential, as systems thinking here applies to culture and behavior as much as to technology. Microservices, cloud-native technologies, and developer experience are familiar territory. A leader eager to make a lasting impact will find a natural fit here.
