Overview
Synaptics is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Embedded to join our dynamic and growing organization. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development and bring-up of next-generation SoC and ASIC solutions powering advanced connectivity and video-processing products. This role requires deep expertise in embedded software development, low-level hardware interaction, and cross-functional collaboration with FPGA, ASIC, hardware, validation and system architects. The engineer will lead software design and bring-up activities for complex platforms incorporating high-speed communication technologies including USB 2.0/3.x/4, DisplayPort and HDMI. This position reports to the Director, Development Engineering.
Responsibilities & Competencies
Job Duties
Technically lead embedded software design, development, integration and debug activities for complex SoC and ASIC platforms
- Define software and firmware architectures for next-generation connectivity and video transport solutions
- Drive silicon bring-up activities from FPGA prototypes through first-silicon validation and production release
- Develop low-level firmware, platform software, boot flows, device drivers and hardware abstraction layers
- Work closely with FPGA, ASIC, hardware, validation and systems teams to define hardware/software interfaces
- Debug complex system-level issues spanning hardware, FPGA, silicon, firmware and software
- Design and implement features supporting USB2/3/4, DisplayPort, HDMI and related technologies
- Analyze performance, latency, power and reliability of embedded systems
- Champion quality through unit testing, static analysis, code coverage, and CI/CD practices
- Participate in code reviews, champion quality, reliability, and security
- Participate in requirements decomposition and allocation across hardware, FPGA, firmware, software, and validation teams
Competencies
- Strong understanding of embedded software and firmware architecture with the ability to drive complex HW/SW/FPGA/ASIC investigations from symptom identification through root-cause analysis and validated resolution
- High expertise in C/C++ and Python scripting
- Strong understanding of SoC subsystems and hardware/software interactions
- Ability to debug issues across FPGA, ASIC, firmware and software domains
- Understanding of high-speed communication protocols and video transport technologies
- Proactive, self-starter, able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Well organized with strong attention to detail; proactively ensures work is accurate
- Positive attitude and work ethic; unafraid to ask questions and explore new ideas
- Resourceful and able to solve problems through adapting technology and a solid understanding of product architecture
- Analytical and able to make informed decisions based on experience and data to improve processes and evaluate design options
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Strong team player with the ability to work within a diverse team and willingness to share knowledge
Qualifications (Requirements)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent
- 8+ years of experience in embedded software and firmware development
- Hands on experience creating architecture and systems designs for complex embedded platforms
- Experience with Linux, RTOS or bare-metal embedded environments
- Experience with USB, I2C, SPI or UART
- Experience with USB2/3/4, DisplayPort, HDMI, PCIe a plus
- Hands on experience with JTAG, protocol analyzers, logic analyzers and oscilloscopes with ability to interpret to isolate root causes
- Track record of driving complex HW/SW/FPGA/ASIC investigations from symptom identification through root-cause analysis and validated resolution
- No travel required
