Description
Ehvert Mission Critical, a business unit of Salas O’Brien, is seeking an experienced Acoustic Engineer to join our growing team, with a primary focus on delivering complex mission-critical projects, including hyperscale and enterprise data centre facilities.
Role Summary
The Acoustic Engineer will provide acoustical engineering expertise throughout the design and delivery of complex mission-critical projects. This role will focus on assessing and addressing noise and vibration challenges associated with data centres and other critical facilities, while working closely with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in acoustical engineering, with experience in noise and vibration analysis, sound control, and the development of practical acoustical solutions for complex facilities. The candidate should also have experience reviewing and understanding noise/nuisance ordinances and codes from AHJs for the purpose of creating compliance frameworks modelling constraints.
The Acoustical Engineer will collaborate closely with clients, architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, BIM/VDC professionals, and other stakeholders to ensure acoustical requirements are effectively integrated into project designs.
This role is ideal for an experienced acoustical engineer who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment and has a strong understanding of acoustical principles, building systems, and the unique noise and vibration challenges associated with mission-critical facilities and data centres.
What We Offer:
- Experience in a high-tech industry within an international company
- Unique, cutting-edge data centre projects
- Comprehensive training and professional development support
- Supportive management and a dynamic team environment
- Career growth potential
- Ability to work from home
- Competitive employee benefits: Health insurance, Life insurance, Short-term and long-term disability, many other benefits, including PTO.
- Opportunity to participate in the company’s retirement plan
- Stock ownership / synthetic equity options
What You Will Do:
- Lead acoustical engineering, noise, and vibration control activities for mission-critical data centre projects.
- Perform environmental noise assessments, predictive noise modelling, acoustical calculations, and technical analyses using industry-standard tools and methodologies.
- Assess noise generated by generators, chillers, cooling towers, dry coolers, air handling systems, pumps, transformers, fans, and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Evaluate cumulative equipment noise and potential impacts at property lines and nearby noise-sensitive receptors.
- Develop practical noise mitigation strategies, including equipment selection criteria, acoustic barriers, enclosures, silencers, louvers, attenuation systems, and other noise control measures.
- Develop vibration isolation and control recommendations for mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Establish project-specific acoustical design criteria and equipment sound requirements that meet the standards of AHJs.
- Review manufacturer sound data, equipment selections, shop drawings, equipment submittals, and contractor RFIs to verify compliance with project acoustical requirements.
- Identify potential acoustical risks during early project phases and provide recommendations before equipment layouts and selections are finalized.
- Prepare acoustical reports, specifications, design criteria, and construction documentation.
- Coordinate acoustical requirements with mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural, controls, and other engineering disciplines.
- Support construction-phase troubleshooting, field noise and vibration measurements, site assessments, and post-construction verification as required.
- Support commissioning activities to verify acoustical performance and alignment with design intent.
- Collaborate with project managers, clients, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Serve as a senior acoustical resource, providing technical guidance and contributing to the development of acoustical design criteria, methodologies, and best practices for data centre projects.
- Represent the client or firm when interacting with AHJs.
What We Expect:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Acoustics, or a closely related technical discipline.
- 10+ years of professional experience in acoustical engineering, environmental noise, mechanical equipment noise control, and/or vibration control.
- Significant experience supporting complex industrial, mission-critical, data centre, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Experience with data centre acoustics is strongly preferred.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment noise and vibration control.
- Demonstrated experience conducting environmental noise assessments and predictive noise modelling.
- Experience evaluating large equipment installations and developing practical noise mitigation strategies.
- Strong understanding of equipment sound data, sound propagation, attenuation, vibration isolation, and environmental noise principles.
- Experience with industry-standard acoustical modelling and analysis software.
- Ability to interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural drawings and coordinate effectively within multidisciplinary design teams.
- Experience preparing acoustical reports, specifications, design criteria, and construction documentation.
- Working knowledge of applicable acoustical standards, environmental noise requirements, building codes, and municipal noise bylaws.
- Experience supporting projects through design, construction, and commissioning.
- Ability to independently manage the acoustical scope of complex projects and provide senior-level technical recommendations.
- Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to explain complex acoustical issues to clients, engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation INCE Certification, and/or relevant acoustics industry credentials are considered an asset.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
