Description
Challenge yourself and us
At AdvanceWorks, we learn together, grow together, and have fun together. And we do all this while creating great software solutions for clients across many industries and geographies.
We are constantly challenging ourselves and each other to use the latest technologies and the best methodologies and make sure we walk the talk.
About the project
You will join a fast-growing global company with more than 40 nationalities working together every day, that it helps companies identify the EHS requirements that apply to them, gives them tools to manage compliance, and supports them as they build and implement corporate EHS strategies.
As the company continues to mature its SaaS offering, engineering quality, scalability, and operational excellence are central to its technical direction.
You will be part of a team of highly skilled engineers working with .NET C#, event-driven and microservices architectures, Kafka, and ElasticSearch, with cloud applications running on Docker and Kubernetes. The work combines hands-on delivery with broader technical questions, such as how systems should evolve, how teams monitor and support applications in production, and how good practices spread across the organisation.
What will be your role
We are looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer to help define technology and speed up its path towards SaaS excellence. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be one of the most experienced technical voices in the team, and your influence will reach beyond your own codebase.
Day to day, you will stay close to the code. You will write high-quality .NET C# that other engineers can use as a reference, build deep expertise in the team's systems, and investigate the most complex issues down to their root cause. Your code reviews will look at the details and also at the overall solution.
Beyond your team, you will lead high-level technical decisions that involve several stakeholders. You will weigh trade-offs and risks and keep the technical approach aligned across the organisation. You will also help set SRE standards, improve documentation for critical systems, and shape the direction of technical improvements.
Growing other engineers is a key part of the role. Through mentorship, demos, and presentations, you will share what you know, raise the technical bar across teams, and help build a strong engineering culture across the organisation.
Your responsibilities will include
- Writing clean, maintainable, high-quality code that serves as a reference for other engineers on the team.
- Developing backend solutions with .NET C# and other modern technologies such as Kafka and ElasticSearch.
- Consistently delivering working, high-quality software as part of a development team.
- Building deep, specialised knowledge of the team's codebase.
- Carrying out thorough, high-value code reviews that cover both technical detail and the overall solution.
- Making sure all critical systems have proper documentation.
- Creating technical guides that engineers across the organisation can use.
- Helping define SRE standards so teams can monitor production applications effectively and respond quickly to incidents.
- Leading high-level technical decisions, identifying trade-offs and risks, and keeping technical alignment across the organisation.
- Diagnosing the root cause of complex bugs using in-depth knowledge of code and infrastructure.
- Implementing fixes together with automated regression tests.
- Contributing to the direction and vision for technical improvements across the organisation.
- Mentoring, supporting, and empowering other engineers.
What should you bring to the team?
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Engineering or a related field.
- At least 10 years of experience with .NET C#, with advanced command of the technology.
- Strong knowledge of microservices architectures, including their patterns, techniques, and trade-offs, applied in more than one context.
- Significant experience (2+ years) with event-driven architectures and event streaming or messaging tools such as Kafka (preferred), Pulsar, or RabbitMQ.
- Experience with NoSQL databases such as ElasticSearch (preferred), DynamoDB, MongoDB, or Redis, and the ability to choose the right solution for each use case.
- Strong knowledge of implementing and scaling cloud applications, including containerisation with Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes.
- Experience working in Agile environments.
- Technical leadership experience (3+ years), including mentoring other engineers, for example by leading projects or initiatives, leading teams, or organising internal technical events.
- Proven ability to spot opportunities to improve good practices and drive technical change across multiple teams.
- Ability to solve highly complex technical problems on your own.
- Experience leading complex technical decisions in critical areas with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to anticipate technical risks, communicate them clearly, and coordinate how to mitigate them.
- Proven track record of quickly learning complex architectures and codebases and becoming an expert in them.
- Fluent English.
- Availability to work in a hybrid model, with 4 days per month at the office in Lisbon.
What is in it for you
- An amazing informal culture of smart, hardworking, and friendly people who support and care about each other.
- A mentorship program from day one.
- The opportunity to work with real-world operational data from tolling and Intelligent Transportation Systems.
- The opportunity to work on large-scale data and cloud projects using modern technologies.
- Formal training and certifications in data, cloud, and engineering excellence.
- Access to cutting-edge tools and technologies.
- A dynamic company where your ideas matter more than job titles.
- Flexibility with responsibility.
- A Rubber Duck to help you debug those tricky data pipelines.
