Our client is a leading multi-disciplinary engineering and building services contractor with operations across the UK, Ireland and wider Europe. The business delivers complex mechanical and electrical engineering solutions across a diverse range of sectors, including data centres, commercial, healthcare, industrial, life sciences and infrastructure.
With a strong track record of delivering large-scale, technically complex projects, the organisation works with major clients, contractors and developers across multiple European markets. Continued growth has created an opportunity for an experienced Business Unit Leader with a strong electrical engineering background to take responsibility for the leadership, performance and development of a significant business unit.
The Role
The Business Unit Leader will provide strategic, commercial and operational leadership across the business unit, with responsibility for project delivery, financial performance, client relationships, people development and future growth.
The successful candidate will have a strong electrical engineering and building services background, combined with substantial experience in senior leadership within a contracting, construction or engineering environment.
Working closely with the wider senior leadership team, the Business Unit Leader will ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, commercially and to the highest standards, while identifying opportunities to expand the business across existing and emerging European markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the business unit, ensuring alignment with wider organisational objectives.
- Take overall responsibility for the financial, commercial and operational performance of the business unit.
- Lead, develop and retain high-performing teams across engineering, project management, commercial and operational functions.
- Oversee the successful delivery of major electrical and multi-disciplinary projects from pre-construction through to completion.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, main contractors, consultants and supply-chain partners across European markets.
- Identify and develop new business opportunities and support the continued expansion of the business.
- Review project performance, financial forecasts, resource requirements and commercial risks.
- Ensure appropriate governance, reporting and performance management processes are embedded across the business unit.
- Provide senior technical leadership and guidance on electrical engineering matters.
- Ensure projects are appropriately resourced and delivered in accordance with contractual, technical and commercial requirements.
- Work closely with estimating, design, procurement, commercial and project delivery teams.
- Promote a strong culture of health, safety, quality and environmental responsibility.
- Drive continuous improvement in project delivery, operational efficiency and commercial performance.
- Support succession planning, talent development and the development of future business leaders.
- Represent the business at senior level with clients and other key stakeholders.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader with a strong electrical engineering background and significant experience within the M&E contracting, construction or building services sector.
You will ideally have:
- A degree, HND/HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in electrical engineering and building services.
- Proven experience leading large-scale projects, programmes or a substantial business unit.
- Strong commercial and financial management capability.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and developing senior management talent.
- A strong understanding of contracts, procurement, project controls and commercial risk.
- Demonstrable experience managing senior client and stakeholder relationships.
- Experience operating within complex, technically demanding construction or engineering environments.
- An understanding of international or European project delivery would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
- A strategic, commercially focused approach combined with strong operational understanding.
- A willingness and ability to travel across European project locations as required.
