Description
Love AWS, Ruby and finding smarter ways to get things done? π
We're looking for a hands-on Platform & Automation Engineer to join our Engineering team at Alkimii.
Someone who enjoys getting under the hood of complex systems, solving problems and finding better ways to make things work.
Your main mission? Own and continuously improve our AWS infrastructure, making sure it's secure, reliable, cost-effective and increasingly automated.
You'll work with AWS, Ruby, Docker, Linux and CI/CD, keeping our platform running smoothly while finding opportunities to eliminate repetitive tasks and improve how we operate.
But this isn't just an infrastructure role.
You'll also get to write Ruby, contribute to our product, build internal tools and explore how AI agents and LLM-powered workflows can make Engineering more productive.
We're looking for someone who doesn't just fix a problem.
You ask why it keeps happening β and then build something so it doesn't happen again.
Sound like your kind of challenge? Keep reading.
A little bit about us π
We're Alkimii, a fast-growing Irish SaaS company on a mission to transform how hospitality businesses manage their People and Property Operations.
Our platform helps hospitality teams simplify their daily operations, connect their people and work more efficiently.
Behind that experience is an Engineering team that believes in building reliable, scalable technology while constantly challenging how things are done.
We're curious by nature, we move quickly and we ask ourselves one question:
How can we make this easier?
For our customers, for our teams and for the engineers building the product.
And that's where you come in.
What's the opportunity? π‘
You'll take ownership of our production AWS environment while helping us build a more automated, resilient and efficient platform.
Your role will bring together three key areas:
βοΈ AWS Infrastructure, DevOps & Reliability
Your primary focus will be ensuring our AWS infrastructure is secure, reliable, scalable and continuously improving. From infrastructure maintenance and deployments to monitoring, security and cost optimisation, you'll take ownership of keeping our platform running smoothly.
π€ Automation & AI
You'll identify opportunities to eliminate repetitive engineering and operational work through scripting, APIs and intelligent automation. You'll also explore how LLMs and AI agents can make our workflows more efficient, introducing new technologies where they deliver genuine value.
π» Ruby Development
Alongside your platform responsibilities, you'll contribute to our Ruby application, build internal tools and independently deliver smaller product improvements that help the wider Engineering team move forward.
Your main focus will be platform ownership, but you'll have the opportunity to contribute across all three areas as our technology and priorities evolve.
What will you be doing? π
Own and improve our AWS infrastructure
You'll:
- Manage and optimise our AWS production environment, including EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, load balancers, ECS and Docker.
- Maintain infrastructure supporting Aurora PostgreSQL, ElastiCache, Redshift and other AWS services.
- Manage AMI upgrades, Docker image updates, operating system patching and infrastructure maintenance.
- Improve our CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration, upgrades and maintenance.
- Strengthen monitoring, logging and alerting using tools such as CloudWatch.
- Improve platform resilience, high availability, disaster recovery and fault tolerance.
- Maintain AWS security configurations, IAM permissions and access controls.
- Investigate production issues, identify root causes and implement long-term solutions.
- Continuously look for opportunities to improve performance, reliability and AWS costs.
The goal? A platform that's secure, reliable and increasingly able to look after itself. Its already good, but lets make it great!
Make automation part of how we work
Repetitive work? We'd rather automate it.
You'll:
- Identify engineering and operational processes that could be automated.
- Build workflows using Ruby, scripts, APIs and modern automation tools.
- Explore practical applications of LLMs and AI agents.
- Experiment with agentic workflows that can support infrastructure monitoring, maintenance and incident investigation.
- Build internal tools that make our engineers more productive.
- Integrate automation with AWS services and internal systems.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and introduce them where they add genuine value.
- Make sure automated processes are secure, reliable and maintainable.
We're excited about what AI can make possible, but we're pragmatic about how we use it.
The best solution isn't always the most sophisticated one. It's the one that actually solves the problem.
Get hands-on with Ruby
You'll also have opportunities to contribute directly to our product.
You'll:
- Work with our Ruby (and a little Rails) stack, we have a vue.js amd GraphQl stack with a rails (Active Record) base.
- Independently deliver smaller, self-contained roadmap features.
- Build internal tools, integrations and utilities.
- Help tackle smaller product improvements outside the main development sprints.
- Support the wider Engineering team when needed.
- Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code.
This isn't primarily a product feature development role, but we want someone who genuinely enjoys building, improving and is happy to get involved when there's something useful to do.
Our tech stack π οΈ
You'll be working across a production SaaS environment that includes:
- Cloud & Compute: AWS, EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, Application Load Balancers, ECS
- Application: Ruby, Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, Vue.js
- Containers: Docker
- Databases & Caching: Aurora PostgreSQL, PostgreSQL, ElastiCache
- Data & Analytics: Redshift, AWS DMS, Apache Airflow
- Monitoring & Security: CloudWatch, SNS, IAM, WAF, GuardDuty, Security Hub
- Infrastructure & Automation: Linux, CI/CD, shell scripting, AWS APIs
You don't need to have worked with every technology in our stack, but you should be confident taking ownership of a production AWS environment and comfortable writing Ruby.
What are we looking for? π
You'll probably thrive in this role if you have:
- Strong hands-on experience managing production infrastructure in AWS.
- Solid programming experience with Ruby.
- Experience with EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, load balancers and AWS networking.
- Experience working with Docker and containerised applications.
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience managing PostgreSQL in production.
- A good understanding of CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Strong scripting, API integration and automation skills.
- Experience with monitoring, security and incident management.
- The ability to take ownership of complex technical systems and work independently.
And just as importantly, we're looking for someone who:
- Takes pride in keeping systems reliable, secure and up to date.
- Sees repetitive tasks as opportunities for improvement.
- Enjoys understanding complex systems and making them simpler.
- Is proactive about maintenance, upgrades and technical improvements.
- Is curious about AI but doesn't introduce complexity for the sake of it.
- Enjoys writing code as much as improving infrastructure.
- Takes ownership, follows through and gets things done.
- Someone who doesn't need to be asked twice to fix something that could be better.
Even better if... π‘
You've worked with some of the following:
- AI agents, LLM-powered workflows or agent orchestration tools.
- Ruby on Rails.
- AWS ECS, Aurora PostgreSQL, ElastiCache or Redshift.
- AWS WAF, IAM, GuardDuty or Security Hub.
- Data pipelines, AWS DMS or Apache Airflow.
- Multi-AZ infrastructure and disaster recovery.
- Python for automation or AI workflows.
- AWS cost optimisation.
Don't tick every box?
That's okay. If you're a strong AWS engineer who enjoys Ruby, loves automation and takes genuine ownership of production systems, we'd still love to hear from you.
What does success look like? π―
Within your first 6β12 months, we'd expect you to have made a visible difference in how we operate our platform.
Infrastructure that's under control. Our AMIs, Docker images, operating systems and infrastructure components are regularly updated, with predictable maintenance and timely security patching.
Less repetitive work. Routine infrastructure tasks, deployments and maintenance processes are increasingly automated.
Smarter engineering workflows. We've introduced practical automation, including AI-powered workflows where appropriate, that genuinely saves time and reduces operational effort.
Ruby contributions that make an impact. Smaller roadmap features, integrations and internal improvements are being delivered independently.
Proactive platform ownership. Problems are identified early, improvements are delivered without constant supervision and our infrastructure continues to become easier to operate.
Ultimately, success means our platform becomes more reliable, secure and efficient β while requiring less manual intervention from Engineering.
What can you expect from us? π
- Our Flexible Working Week β because we take seriously the productivity and wellbeing of our team.
- Coverflex - Flexible compensation & employee benefits
- In house English / Spanish lessons!
