AI/ML Engineer – Applied Research & Systems Design The Opportunity We're looking for an experienced AI/ML Engineer to help design and build a shared AI/ML platform supporting multiple engineering and research teams. This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong applied research component. You'll tackle complex technical problems, design targeted experiments and evaluate different systems and architectures to determine the most effective solutions. The focus isn't on developing new AI models, but on designing or selecting the systems and infrastructure that enable machine learning at scale. What You'll Do - Translate ambiguous technical challenges into clearly defined problems, hypotheses and targeted experiments. - Evaluate different systems, technologies and architectural approaches through prototyping, benchmarking and experimentation. - Design scalable, reliable infrastructure supporting both traditional ML and emerging AI workloads. - Work closely with engineering and research teams to understand requirements and identify shared platform needs. - Turn experimental findings into technical designs and hands-on engineering projects. - Assess architectural trade-offs across performance, scalability, reliability and efficiency. What We're Looking For - Strong software engineering background, particularly Python and systems design. - Solid understanding of traditional machine learning, including algorithms, model training, validation and evaluation. - Experience designing distributed systems, ML infrastructure or large-scale data processing platforms. - A scientific approach to problem-solving, with experience designing experiments, testing hypotheses and making evidence-based technical decisions. - Ability to move from technical discovery and experimentation through to architecture and implementation. - Strong communication skills and experience collaborating with technical stakeholders. Particularly Relevant Experience - Building shared ML platforms or research infrastructure. - ML experimentation, benchmarking and evaluation frameworks. - Distributed computing, high-performance systems or large-scale ML workloads. - Experience combining traditional ML and modern AI technologies. The ideal candidate is a strong AI/ML engineer or software engineer with deep ML knowledge, excellent systems design skills and a scientific mindset.
